Kiseru tobacco pipes are typically made with a metal mouth piece and bowl, with a bamboo pipe in between. They were often hung from the mens sash on their kimono and had a tobacco pouch as a counter weight to which they were joined.
With such a tiny tobacco bowl, generally only one puff was possible before the ash was tipped out into the hibachi fire pot.
Many kiseru pipes contained concealed weapons in the Edo period as swords and other weapons were prohibited in public. More elaborate pipes were a status symbol and some were beautifully carved and decorated.
We sell vintage kiseru pipes and their condition varies. They are often no longer able to be used for their original purpose.
HINT: Kiseru pipes look great on display or mounted as a group in a frame, or on a wall.
