Kokeshi

Kokeshi are handmade, turned-wooden dolls from the Tohoku (northern) region of Japan. Originally made as toys, they became a popular souvenir for travelers to the region who were visiting the hot springs in the Edo period.

The different shapes and designs hand-painted on the dolls are distinctive to each area within the region. Strict rules still govern the traditional regional designs and restrict individual creativity.

IMG_3019We sell vintage Kokeshi dolls of various ages and regions. Age deepens the colour of the timber and in some cases fades the painted design, giving the dolls more personality and warmth. Despite being made of timber, they are easily imported into countries with strict customs regulations, such as Australia and New Zealand.

HINT:  These vintage dolls make a lovely display in groups of different sizes, shapes and colours.
