Maekake

Maekake – Merchant Aprons

IMG_0499Traditional workmen’s aprons have been worn by merchants and craftsmen since the 15th century, especially for liquor and food supply stores. The indigo dyed aprons are worn tied around the hips, and display an advertisement for the business of the wearer.

They generally reach down past the knee; however, some are shorter.

Many have designs printed on both sides, so that when one side gets dirty, they can be turned around. Wash the aprons separately as the colour will stain.

We sell vintage Maekake. Often, the more used the appearance of the apron is, the more highly sought after they are.

HINT:  These aprons are a great practical gift for men (or women) and make for interesting conversation starters at a BBQ. They also make attractive wall hangings.
